In a coffee shop, have you ever been intimidated ordering a different type of coffee drink simply because of the numerous choices? Or are you the type that orders the same kind over and over again because you don’t know what the other options are – you don’t know what it looks like, what it is made of, what it taste like.

Some readers will naturally argue that they order the usual because that is one that they prefer. Yes, that may be true, but let’s face it, many coffee drinkers are curious and interested on the different kinds of coffee drinks. Unfortunately, they tend to shy away in ordering so because they don’t know what to expect.

This post aims to showcase seven different and “must-try” kinds of coffee drinks that are commonly found in coffee shops. Additionally, the latter part of this post will briefly discuss how to make sophisticated single cup coffee servings at the comfort of your own home.

Espresso –

Seemingly the most popular but definitely the strongest type of coffee drink. Espresso is served black and hot – though some coffee drinkers prefer to put ice in it. You’ll know if it is properly brewed by the thickness of the golden brown crema (foam) on the surface. It is cupped up in small servings and is the base for other coffee specialty drinks like the latte, cappuccino, mocha, etc…

Cappuccino –

Another popular coffee drink is the cappuccino because of its luxurious complex flavors. It is prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed-milk froth. Cappuccino is served hot while the cold serving (iced cappuccino) is usually called cappuccino freddo

Caffè latte –

Also known as coffee milk. Caffè latte is an espresso added with steamed milk.

Macchiato –

Very similar to the one directly above. The main difference of Macchiato with caffè latte is that in Macchiato,

espresso is added to the milk.

Café au lait –

From the name alone, it can be deduced that this is a French coffee drink. This drink is similar to a caffè latte but instead of using espresso, brewed coffee is used.

Café Mocha –

A caffè latte with an addition of chocolate in the form of sweet cocoa powder (more typical) or chocolate syrup

How to prepare and enjoy sophisticated coffee drinks at home –

It is only typical for coffee lovers to wonder how to make a great coffee by themselves – obviously what they want is different from regular coffee which is generally found on grocery stores. They would ask such questions like what brewers to use, what type of coffee to prepare, what are coffee pods / capsules, etc…

Fortunately, there are a number of reliable dedicated coffee sites on the web such as OneGreatCup (OneGreatCup.com). Listed below are some useful information that can be found on the site:

Reviews of different coffee brewers

Coffee pod reviews

What are Keurig and news regarding K-cups

There are still plenty of good information found on the site, simply click the link above to go to OneGreatCup coffee site.

That’s about it. There are many coffee drink variations that you can make and try. Don’t forget to visit OneGreatCup and indulge to some fine coffee. FYI please, that the site also have some promotional offers so watch out for it and take advantage of some good deals!

Seeing how our diversity is one of the most celebrated human attributes, it would be almost ridiculous if not absurd to crown just one of the single cup coffee brewers out there as the best one of them. However what we can do is celebrate our diversity by enjoying the advantages of each system and allowing you to choose the best one for you, because, ultimately, it is not about the best coffee brewing system but about how good Keurig’s K-Cup, Tassimo or Flavia really make you feel about your cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

And the great thing about these single cup coffee brewers is that each has their individual characteristics and it will be relatively easy for you to choose your favorite. The systems, which is to say the machines used, are relatively the same, with maybe Tassimo leading the way because they use a Bosh made machine, but then again Keurig does deliver a faster cup of coffee. However the important difference is in the taste of the brew these systems deliver.

So, if you enjoy variety in your drinking habits throughout the day, then you will be delighted to know that Tassimo can brew up to 8 different types of drinks from a simple coffee to latte, cappuccino, espresso, crema, mocha, hot chocolate and tea. Keurig and Flavia can only brew coffee, tea and a small variety of chocolate, and even here Keurig can boast over 250 brands of coffee, chocolate and tea while Flavia can only go as high as 30.

And then again that huge array of drinks that Tassimo boasts may be their downfall for some of you, because the fact is that they are using powdered and artificial flavors to create their great range. Keurig and Flavia, on the other hand, have their own patented preserving and brewing systems that deliver a more natural and complex range of flavors. In fact with the Keurig K-Cup you actually get the exact quantity needed for a single cup from your favorite coffee brand, perfectly sealed to keep in the flavor and nested in its very own filtering system. And when you put the K-Cup into the machine it punctures it and simply injects hot water that will be infused by the aroma of the coffee or coco grounds or of the tea leaves inside and what you get will be that same full flavor taste that you would expect from a homemade cup. In fact that is why Tassimo’s T-Discs are significantly smaller than the Keurig K-Cups, they don’t need a filtering system.

Ultimately though we need to remember that even the best single cup coffee brewer is there to celebrate you and make your day better. So if like to start your day with an Espresso, go on to drink a hot chocolate, enjoy a cappuccino after lunch, a mocha in the afternoon and celebrate the weekends with a latte then Tassimo is the best solution for you. And if what you crave is to explore the depths of taste that only a natural cup of coffee or tea can develop in its slow maturation and brewing than Flavia or Keurig’s K-Cup is what you should go for.

Douwe Egberts coffee pods made for the Senseo coffee brewers are now gone from the market Sara Lee announced to distributors that the coffee pods we all know and love are going away.

I fully expect that Hamilton Beach, the maker of the Senseo Brewers for the US Market will transition to another roaster, but it means Senseo coffee lovers will be making the switch to a new roaster in the coming months.

The great news: We have a full line of pods that fit the Senseo Machines as well as most other pod coffee makers.

All Cafe Classic Pods fit the Senseo Brewer

All Donut Shop Pods fit the Senseo Brewer (except the Travel Mug 12 gram pod, that will work with the double pod holder)

All Wolfgang Puck Pods fit the Senseo Brewer (except the 12 gram pods, they will work with the double pod holder)

All Marley Coffee Pods fit the Seneo Brewer

All Reunion Island Pods are 12 gram, they will work with the double pod holder

All Sweet Unity Farm Pods will fit the Senseo Brewer.

Note: Our pods are 9 to 12 grams so the coffee will be stronger (or you can make a larger cup). The Douwe Egbert pods were 7 to 7.5 grams of coffee per pod.

Please email us if you are trying to find some suggestions to replace the coffees you prefer.

Ken’s Notes:

For me this is definitely a candidate for cream (at least) and sugar. It is a medium roast, but has a good bit of a bite that lingers. A bit of a smoky (maybe really dark chocolaty) taste that is nice, although not my personal taste.
